London, Jan 28 India's External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna met Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith here on Wednesday to seek information on what steps Australia is taking to counter growing attacks on Indian students.

"I will be keen to find out what steps Australia is taking in order to mitigate the grievances of Indian students," Krishna said before the start of the meeting.

Australian sources said at the meeting under way the two leaders would be discussing counter-terrorism, the situation in Afghanistan and Yemen, and the forthcoming World Cup hockey tournament in India, besides the students issue.

Krishna and Smith are in London, leading delegations to a global conference on Afghanistan on Thursday.

Following mounting outrage in India over the fatal stabbing of Nitin Garg, a 21-year-old Indian student, early this month, the Australian government recently handed over to India a police dossier of high-profile attacks on Indians over the past year.

The dossier, prepared by Victoria Police, was handed over after Smith telephoned Krishna Jan 11 to express his condolences over Garg's murder.

The spate of attacks on Indians in Australia has caused an outcry in India. Two of the vicious attacks proved fatal. The assaults have strained relations between Canberra and New Delhi.
