Overseas buyers to attend handicraft fair

Bhubaneswar, Feb 23 At least 31 overseas buyers and exporters have confirmed their participation in a two-day international handicrafts and handloom fair beginning in the state capital on Wednesday, an official said on Monday.

The International Handicraft and Handloom Fair 2010 is being organised by the state government here with financial assistance from the Commerce Ministry.

"At least 31 overseas buyers, exporters and business houses have confirmed their visit to the meet," a senior official of the state information and public relation department said on Monday.

As part of the event, a fair and the buyer-seller meet will be held at the Mayfair Hotel.

At least 75 exhibitors in handicraft and handloom sector from the state will showcase their products in the event, he said.

Orissa is famous for its exquisite handloom and handicraft. The state has about 1.25 lakh artisans, engaged in palm leaf Writing, patachitra, applique and metal work and about four lakh weavers producing a rich range of textures.

"The two-day event will not only help our artisans to showcase their handicraft and handloom treasures, but also provide an ideal opportunity for the buyers for placing orders at very competitive prices," he said.

"The buyer-seller meet will also focus on the specific needs of the buyers and a complete handholding with manufactures for sustainable supply chain management," he said.
