Celebrating Durga puja in Muscat

Dubai, Sep 28: Bengalis living in Oman's capital Muscat are all set to celebrate Durga puja on a grand scale this year.

Most of the expat Bengalis will gather at the Hindu temple in Sohar, in old Muscat, to celebrate the five-day festivities, reported the Oman Tribune.

Bengalis have been celebrating puja here since 1982.

"Earlier the celebrations were held at the Osco camp in Wadi Kabir, but since 1994, the puja is being held at the old temple," said Swapan Chakraborty, convener of Bengali club Bangiya Parishad.

The main deity has been flown in from Kumartully in Kolkata, he said.

"Funds generated from various programmes held from time to time help the parishad organise the pujas on such a grand scale," Chakraborty added.

Like every year, different programmes like quiz and art competitions have also been lined up.
