Distinguished Delegates, Ladies and Gentlemen,
At the outset I would like to welcome all the distinguished invitees to this Regional Workshop on the issue 'Marriages to Overseas Indians'.
Problems in NRI marriages discussed
Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi said that his Ministry fully recognises the urgent need to build safeguards to protect unsuspecting brides, and their parents seeking marriage alliances with overseas Indians.
National Consultation: the outcomes
The Indian diaspora, which is spread all over the world, has its own unique diversities. It is seen that, even after many years of stay in a foreign land, Indian men prefer to marry Indian women due to expectations of better socio-cultural bonding. However, such expectations are not always realised, leading to cases of marriage frauds, harassment and violence against Indian women in the host countries and in India.
Gender a priority in diaspora agenda
It has been acknowledged gender is an important dimension of the Indian diaspora as in the formation of the diaspora over four waves of migration and its successful transformation into a 'knowledge' diaspora, to which women have made a tremendous contribution.
National consultation on marriage to overseas Indians
A national consultation on marriage to overseas Indians was organised on February 18 at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs(MOIA). The purpose of the national consultation was to take into account the perspectives of various stakeholders and make use of their practical experience in finalising a booklet for the guidance of women planning to get married to overseas Indians. The consultation was inaugurated by Dr. Girija Vyas, Chairperson, National Commission for Women (NCW). Vayalar Ravi, Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs gave the presidential address.
