Dubai, May 10: Two Indian expatriates died in separate road accidents in the Gulf on May 10.

While a wholesale vegetable dealer in Qatar was killed when the van he was travelling in overturned, a construction worker was crushed to death after a truck ran over him on the Jumeirah Beach Road in Dubai.

According to a report in The Peninsula newspaper, 24-year-old Ashfaq was travelling in a van to the city of Al Khor in Qatar to supply vegetables to retailers there, when the front tyre of the vehicle burst. The van slipped off the road and then overturned several times.

While Ashfaq, who hailed from Irikkur in Kerala, was killed on the spot, the driver of the van, Bharatan, another Keralite, escaped with minor injuries.

The report quoted sources as saying that Ashfaq, who had been living in Qatar for four years, will be buried in Qatar's capital Doha.

In another incident, 31-year-old Birbal Singh, a labourer at the Jumeirah beautification project in Dubai, was killed when a truck, used for heavy construction work, ran over him. Hailing from Punjab, Singh was an employee of Bin Laden Constructions, according to a report in the Khaleej Times newespaper.

The report quoted a co-worker of Singh as saying, "Everything happened within seconds. We were sitting together and measuring the road line. We did not even realise the truck was reversing. Suddenly I saw the truck had passed behind me crushing Birbal to death. There was nothing we could do to save him as he died within seconds."

Police have arrested the driver of the truck, who is an Egyptian.
