Dubai, Aug 8 Police in Dubai have rescued three Indian workers following a tip-off that their former employer had allegedly beaten them and locked them up in a labour camp.

All three were employees of the Dubai National Construction Company.

One of the company's supervisors has also been arrested.

The Indians alleged that the company did not pay them their salaries for three months and they ran away. Thereafter, they found a job with another company.

The workers said that the company management traced them and forcibly took them away.

According to another worker, "the employers have allegedly threatened the workers that they would harm their families back in India if they filed a police complaint."

The Indian Consulate has also intervened in the matter.

"We are aware about the incident. We have asked the company for an explanation and also urged their officials to visit the consulate... We have decided to take up the issue and if we find that the company has indulged in any foul play, we will take necessary action," B.S. Mubarak of the consulate told the paper.

Dinesh Katti, managing director of the company, denied that the workers were beaten up.

He said: "About 10 of our workers absconded recently as they were paid higher salaries for working illegally with another company.

"We traced some of the absconding workers and took them to the labour camp and locked them up in the room so they didn't escape until their deportation was completed."

Commenting on the non-payment of salaries, he said: "We hold three months salary of the workers following our recent decision to switch over from giving cash payments to making bank transfers. We have opened accounts for all workers and hence all the salaries will be transferred to the bank soon."
